Venting System of Freestanding Wood Heaters

A wood heater is a box made up of metal boxes to burn wood fire inside so that metal gets hot and makes the room warm. These units which can be bought from outdoor furniture stores are very efficient as they use renewable fuel that is found everywhere and is an excellent choice for home heating.

Freestanding wood heaters mean heaters that are not installed into a fireplace. Some freestanding stoves are on legs while others are on pedestals, but all of them are few inches above the floor.

The smoke from theses heaters come out of the top rear of the stove and you need to make way for pipes of smoke to escape out. When installing a freestanding stove, you can choose any of the following venting system.
  • Through the wall: The stovepipe of the heater is routed to an already existing chimney.
  • Chimney: Fixing a chimney directly above the heater would enable the smoke to escape from its outlet.
  • Hearth stove installation: Venting the freestanding heater into a vent for fireplaces. The rear vent of the heater would be facing the front of fireplace.
While selecting a standalone system, think about the venting system before finalizing the product.
